Washoe Valley wind puts dust indoors

New Washoe City sits on the east side of Washoe Valley, and the valley is known for wind. Afternoon gusts come down off the Carson Range and cross the valley floor with little to slow them. They lift fine dirt off open lots and sagebrush, and in dry years off the bare edges of Washoe Lake. That dust does not stay outside. It slips past window seals and under doors, then settles on every flat surface in the house.

Valley dust is finer than the dirt you track in on shoes. It floats, so it coats ceiling fan blades and the slats of blinds as well as the floor. Wipe the floor first and the next pass on the fan drops it right back down. It also packs into window tracks and sliding door grooves, where it turns to grit that wears on the rollers. Skip those spots for a season and the doors start to drag.

Too much water can loosen that vinyl, so those walls need a damp cloth rather than a scrub. Tubs and showers are often fiberglass or acrylic, which scratch under a gritty cleanser and then stain faster. A crew that scrubs every surface the same way can leave marks that never come out.
