Reno wind leaves dust in every room

Reno sits in the high desert at the foot of the Sierra, and the air here stays dry most of the year. In the afternoon, wind comes down off the mountains and picks up dust from the sagebrush hills and every open lot. That dust does not stay outside. It gets in under doors and around window frames, then settles on every flat surface in the house.

The dry air makes it worse. Dust picks up a static charge here. It clings to blinds and ceiling fan blades instead of falling to the floor where a vacuum would find it. Summer can bring wildfire smoke over the mountains. It leaves a gray film on sills and glass, and a dry rag mostly smears it around. Older Reno houses need a slower clean

Reno has a wide mix of houses. The Old Southwest, near Idlewild Park and the river, is full of older brick and wood-frame homes with deep trim and built-in cabinets. Midtown has small bungalows, many of them rented out. Houses like these have more edges and grooves than a new build, and each one holds dust. Skip those spots for a season and the dust turns into gray grime that a feather duster cannot lift.

Older finishes need gentler cleaning, too. Original hardwood floors and painted trim do not like a soaking mop, and a harsh cleaner can dull a finish that has lasted for decades. Wood blinds and plantation shutters get wiped one slat at a time. One customer listed what the crew finished on a deep clean: "Corners, woodwork, kitchen, baths, plantation shutters, and dusting of curios on high ledge. All done!"

The newer parts of Reno are a different job. South Meadows, Damonte Ranch, Somersett and the northwest hills are mostly stucco tract homes with tall ceilings and plant ledges over the entry. Those ledges and the tops of the kitchen cabinets are where Reno dust sits for months, because nobody can reach them without a ladder. On a deep clean, those high spots are part of the job.
