Sparks has older homes and new builds

Sparks started as a railroad town, and the blocks near Victorian Square and along Prater Way still show it. Many houses there are small cottages or mid-century ranch homes with original wood trim and panel doors that have been painted over many times. North and east of downtown, the city looks different. Wingfield Springs and Kiley Ranch are mostly newer stucco houses with tall ceilings and big windows. The old houses and the new ones collect dirt in different places, so we clean them differently.

In an older Sparks house, most of the dirt is in the small places. Wood trim and the raised panels on old doors hold a thin line of grime that a quick wipe misses. Older aluminum windows and sliding doors let fine dust in around the frames, and it packs into the tracks until the door drags. We wipe trim by hand and move furniture to get at the baseboards behind it. Old hardwood that has been refinished gets a damp mop, never a soaking wet one, because standing water works into the seams.

The newer houses up north need different work. Tall ceilings mean high ledges and cabinet tops that nobody reaches from the floor, so dust sits up there for months. A customer listed “dusting of curios on high ledge” among the jobs we finished, and these floor plans are full of ledges like that. Desert wind blows dust into Sparks homes

Sparks sits in the high desert, and the wind is what surprises people new to town. On many afternoons it comes off the Sierra and blows hard across the open ground at the east and north edges of town. It carries fine dust, and that dust gets in around door sweeps and window frames. Within a few days of a good cleaning it is back on the sills and the tables. Houses that back onto open desert or an empty building lot get the heaviest layer.

The air here stays dry for most of the year, and dry dust clings. It carries a static charge and sticks to blinds and window screens instead of lifting off. A dry duster mostly throws it back into the air, and it settles again on the same shelf. So we dust with a damp cloth that picks it up, and we rinse that cloth often. Some summers, wildfire smoke drifts over the valley and leaves a gray film on sills and ledges. A dry wipe will not lift it.

Winter brings a different mess. Snow melts into mud on new lots with bare dirt yards, and the sand spread on icy roads comes home on boots and dog paws. That grit grinds into entry tile and scratches wood floors if it sits. It collects by the door from the garage, which in many Sparks homes is the door everyone uses. Garages get the worst of it, and we also declutter and organize garages and closets when a house needs more than a cleaning.

Move-outs and sales need a deeper clean

Sparks has plenty of rental housing, from big apartment complexes to single houses that change tenants every few years. When a lease ends, the landlord walks through and looks hardest at the kitchen and the bathrooms, since that is where most deposit arguments start. A regular weekly clean does not go deep enough to pass that walkthrough. Our move-out cleaning does.
